  As they passed by me, Olivia leaned in closely and whispered, “When I get back, distract Nina and I’ll drag him away.”

  I nodded. “Thank you.”

  Watching them walk away alone made me indescribably nervous – frantic to the point where the burning in my leg temporarily disappeared.

  I thought of how I promised Jessica and Sophia that everything would be fine too. I thought of how I failed miserably and that they paid for it with their lives. And how I’d continue to pay with never ending grief and nightmares – as I deserved to.
